I don't know much about cars. But after flipping through the movie channels, I settled on watching the movie "The Fast and the Furious" which got me thinking. In the movie, they boast of "10 Second Cars", cars that can go 1/4 mile in 10 seconds. Do such cars even exist? I checked around an even a Lamborghini is rated to go 1/4 mile in 12 seconds. So I guess my real question is, if some kid can buy a junky Civic and put $20,000 in it, can he get it to go faster than a $160,000 Lamborghini?

Yes, those 10 seconds cars do exist. Like the Evo in the movie, if it's modified to over 500 horses, it might reach to the 10 second mark. The most powerful Evo is the Evo EQ400, not sure the exact name, but it is the fastest car on the planet right now. I personally have a 2006 Subaru STi with 600 horses. I Drifting Rally with it. As you know, STi is AWD, I could do a four wheel spin very easily with these kinds of power. I tested: 0-100 in 3.6 second and 1/4 at 9.98 clicks. These kinds of cars are animals and fun to play around with. But you wouldn't want to touch the engine of those Lamborghini or Ferrari of course. They already the best cars people can buy. For my STi, I am paying heavy prices for this toy: Like change wheels all the time and paying $600 of gas each month. Feeling kinda sorry for it.

Sport Compact Car tested some of the cars from 2 Fast 2 Furious - not a single 10 second car among them. And the movie's descriptions of what mods many of those cars had showed that the writers hadn't been listening to their technical advisor at all.

I have seen a couple of 10 second cars in action myself, including one guy who got a ratty Nova for free, dropped a used circle track engine into it, and managed to make it run 10's for a few thousand dollars. He took a lot of rather scary short cuts building it and I sure wouldn't have wanted to drive it on the street, but I saw it run those times myself.

A 10 second Civic is pretty hard to do. You'd probably have to spend $10,000 on the engine alone, run it on race gas, and you'll have a very hard time getting traction. And if you do get enough traction, it's likely to break axles. But 10 second Civics exist, and I could see such a thing being built on a $20,000 budget.

Usually, you wouldn't want to run a high powered drag car against an Italian exotic on a road course. But there are other modified cars that would probably give it a run for its money there, too. I've heard quite a few entertaining stories about people beating Italian supercars on road courses with everything from an RX-7 to a cheap Cobra kit car to a Cadillac CTS-V. Italian exotics are kind of overrated.

My heavens, I never have been flashed, but I did unintentionally flash a few folks once. I was in the hospital some time back and decided to take a stoll to the vending area. Well, I wasn't thinking about what I was wearing and, let's just say that those hospital gowns don't leave a lot to the imagination on the backside. The nurse came up from behind me and put a blanket over my shoulders . . . I was wondering why it was a little drafty back there!

Yes...10 second cars exist...but they are not very streetable. They are purpose built racing cars that still happen to be street legal. Keep in mind...that a 50,000 dollar Corvette also goes as fast as that Lamborghini... Speed can be made on a budget.

Personally, I never understood why someone would want to drive a cheap Honda econobox...let alone spend money trying to make one go faster... Its just stupid. If they want to go like a Corvette...buy a Corvette!

There are Super stock drag cars that go 9 &10 second quarter mile times. they look like street cars.
But, Very few cars on the street can. They are not very drivable to the grocery store. You will hear claims of 10 second cars but almost all will be Bull Sh*t.
12-14 second cars are pretty common.

yep! Real 10 second cars exhist. You're not going to find one that'll do that from the dealer, but I got an ugly ole 81 Malibu that I've got less than 5,000 in counting the engine that runs 9.89's (without nirous or a blower or turbo) If you want, I'll send you a picture and one of my time tickets from the drag races. Believe it!

Probably not. But hey on the big screen anything is possible.
There are 10 second and faster but they fall into the professional drag scene.
