Here's a cheaper version of Proactiv I came up with myself, and it's worked really well for me. You need to buy:
1. a gentle cleanser (like Cetaphil or Spectro jel)
2. a good toner/astringent (like Clean & Clear)
3. a 2.5%-5% benzoyl peroxide cream (Spectro vanishing cream or Clean & Clear persa-gel 5) C&C 10 is available but that can seriously irritate your skin. Try to get something for "sensitive skin" to reduce the risk of allergies or irritation.
4. a gentle facial moisturizer (like Moisturel - it's important that the moisturizer you use isn't oily or heavy, it has to be for sensitive skin and quick absorbing and light)
When you've gone through the first 2 steps of cleansing your face and applying the toner, make sure your fingertips are clean and put a drop (size of a small pea) of the benzoyl cream and a drop of the moisturizer on your fingertip and mix together. Apply to your entire face and gently massage in. Do this everyday (once or twice) and you should see results in 2 weeks if not sooner. You may find that you get a few more minor pimples when you first start using it, but that's just the dormant ones coming to the surface. If you find your face gets too dry, try using bit more lotion than the benzoyl cream, OR apply more moisturizer afterwards. And if you have 1 or 2 really bad/big pimples put a separate dab of the benzoyl cream directly on them. Good luck!

If you’re looking for accurate acne information, best to see a dermatologist. Some people believe doctors are predisposed to take the easy way to deal with acne… prescription drugs. But, with many, this simplistic answer may not be the appropriate course of action. Some feel that such prescription drugs just treat the symposium and not the underlying cause. But, a local dermatologist is still your best starting point.
For me personally, I discovered a great informational acne treatment site. Not only is there good information/articles but I got their audio e-book and following it’s advice can now say that my acne is a thing of the past! Keep in mind, were all different and there are various types of acne, so what works for some may not be totally effective for all.
Bottom line, hang in there, you will get past this! Sincere best wishes and good luck.
Oh, by the way the site that helped me is:

I know a lot of people that have taken care of their acne by just getting a good tan and keeping it.
For some reason when you go to a tanning booth it calms down the acne. It also colors you skin darker that makes the acne that you have harder to see. A lot of people have problems with acne because they worry about it and over wash their face and/or pick at it and the Tanning seems to help keep you from playing with your face too much.
Also, if you can afford it, a lot of people claim that PROACTIV seems to work but you might want to just try getting a one month unlimited tanning package and see how you feel after about two weeks.
At the very least you will have a great tan and be looking good.
GOOD LUCK

If you are suffering from just a few pimples, now and then, any one of the products, listed above should work.
If you really have a severe case of acne, it is due to an allergy to something you're eating.
The most common one, is milk.
See a dermatologist. He will test you to find out, WHAT food you are allergic to.
There's good news to all this, however.
The allergy is temporary. It will disappear, after you have matured and you can go back to eating, whatever it is, that you are having a reaction to.
My father had to stop drinking milk for awhile, when HE was young.
Good Luck!...A dermotologist can find the cause easily.

I know quite a few people who had severe acne, and got Roaccutane prescribed to them by a dermatologist. It's a 6month course, and costs approximately R5000. It's basically a very strong form of Vitamin A (which regulates your body's natural exfoliation processs and oil production) and works like a miracle cure! It makes your skin very dry, but your dermatologist should give you lotions and washes for that (Cetaphil,Nutraderm and Epimax). Once you've finished the course, your skin will be normal in both complexion and type. Otherwise, if it's not very severe, try tea-tree oil, or 1%benzoyl peroxide, and lay off the foundation.

There are all sorts of different brands, whether you see a dermetoligist or a friend says "oh this is what I use" it usually comes down to this:
If you are trying to get rid of acne brand name loyalty and all that doesn't mean a thing. Getting the product and using it does. Alot of people wash their faces but don't use toners or lotion. Try that.
If you are female try top brand (clinique) acne makeup. Makes a difference.

separate an egg, discard the white, stir the yolk to blend. apply to your face and let dry for 10 minutes. rinse well. do this every day for 30 days. you will see a difference after the first time. after the 30 days is up, do it once every 2 weeks.
one egg yolk will work for about 3 applications. refrigerate it between uses.
sounds a little strange and too easy to work, but it does!
