If your looking for a faster boot or response time in general your looking at the wrong item. you want a faster processor. check with your motherboard to see what it supports then go to priceliine.com and look for a processor that can fit. 256M is decent and should not affect startup at menu draws. If your computer is running slower than when you fisrt got it, check for viruses, clean your registry, and remove any programs you do not use. If this still doesn't help, get a faster processor and I recommend getting another stick of 256 to make you computer run with a total of 512M If you're looking to build a gaming machine, go for a new motherboard, a large hard drive, fast processor, 2Gigs of RAM and a good video card. A good gaming machine will cost (not preassembled) about $700 - $1500 USD. A great gaming machine costs between $2000-$5000 USD (not preassembled) and this includes a CPU A/C unit for the core processor and the video processor, a homongous hard drive 260G or larger, mabe even three of them, DVD burner, a $1000+ motherboard which requires a special edition of Windows and an AMD dual core. Yes expensive, but you'll have fun then twiddle your thumbs for a game that actually tests the systems limits which wont come for about 5 years.

It depends on the specifications of the rest of your computer and the demands of the game. Slow hard disks can also cause the computer to run slowly. 768 MB of RAM is decent for most normal use IMHO. I really doubt you will regret buying that memory. It's really hard for me to say if you will be completely satisfied with the way your games will play, because I am not big into video games. But the new memory is almost certainly going to improve the performance of your computer. Good luck!

Yep with more RAM added, some improvement will be there. BTW you have not mentioned which Processor is running on your PC. Speed is directly related to CPU and RAM. So try to upgrade your CPU as well, if possible.

I would also recommend you to re-install the OS - then it can take full benefit of RAM Upgrade. Most OSes (particulary Microsoft ones) doesnt tune themselves when a System upgrade happens. So you re-install (i.e. do an upgrade on existing OS with same OS) your OS.

I had a Mac a long time ago that had 4 Megs built in - I got 4 more for slot 2. Faster. Finally got a 16M RAM strip for slot 2 that gave me a helova fast MAC. 20M of power.

On a current XP, 512 is adequate for everyday users (me). For gamers a gig of RAM (minimum) is required. My Bro-in-law's PC has 3 Gs and a fast Video Card

your computer is using integrated video... that is a slow down as well... how do i know? you said you have 256 mb RAM but in the edit you added that it has 224, a 32mb difference... this can only occur with integrated video... get a dedicated graphics board for that machine and watch the speed increase

Adding ram is always good!

But make sure you're not running spam or viruses because they can slow you down. What kind of Processor are you running?

Still not going to play new games smoothly unless you have a good video card to go with that RAM...and I suggest a minimum of 1gig

in case you choose to truly improve your device, you would be able to desire to purchase a sparkling processor as a results of fact the cpu utilization peaks a lot. in the journey that your processor is old, you will choose a sparkling motherboard too for the recent processor. additionally a minimum of one million gig of ram. in case you do no longer decide to enhance, uninstall pointless classes, delete undesirable archives, do a disk cleanup, a disk defragmenter and run as much as date protection scans (anti-virus and anti-undercover agent ware) on your pc.

there are a number of things that decide your systems speed.

yes, 512 more megabytes will speed up your computer, though it may or may not be noticable.

also, 768MB is crap for modern computers.
