I breast fed my son for 11 months. He will be 4 next month and I still have breast milk. Just a few drops on each side but why won't it go away? I don't check very often so it's not from that. The same thing happened with my daughter that I breast fed for 6 months. I think she was around 7 when it finally was completely gone.

Thanks for all the answers.
It's not enough to donate. Really, its just a few drops. No weird medication or anything. The dry up pills didn't work with the first one. It's really not a big problem more of a curiosity. I don't have insurance and it's not worth $60 for a doctor to tell me it happens sometimes.

I second the thought of Jeanine G.
This problem differs from individual to individual.
Pl. take advise of a Children Specialist immediately.
There is nothing to worry, you are blessed with so much breast milk. But I can understand your embarassment dear lady. Anyway, too much is too bad!

There are no hospitals that will take your breastmilk. They can't process it for use (they don't have the facilities or equipment necessary), and you have not been tested. But there are other good ideas here from other posters, so follow the suggestions. If you are going to continue to have extra milk, consider contacting the nearest human milk bank (look on the Human Milk Banking Association of North America) to begin donating your milk.

You could do one of several things,

1) talk to your dr. about how to dry up the supply

2) pump the breast milk and donate it to the local mother's milk bank. They keep breast milk on hand to help infants who's mother cannot produce and the infant's bodies won't take anything but breast milk. I don't know the condition that causes this, but there are milk banks for this purpose. It's a kind thing to do. Can always ask your local La Letche league or your local hospital about the milk bank if you choose to do this.

I would say ask the doctor
there is something that they can give you

but if it keeps on going a while after you had your child
you really need to get that checked out
not to scare you or anything but breast milk leaking when you are not pregnant is a symptom of a certain kind of brain cancer
you wont lose anything to get checked out and ask your doctor

I breast fed my first two kids and didn't have any problems drying up once they no longer was nursing but I would suggest asking the Dr. I believe they have medicine to dry you up.

My wife has this problem as well. My daughter is 2 and she is like you some drops here and there. She went to the doctor and the doc had her take some tests. apparantly all is ok....Still no explanation.I guess it's not unhealthy, yet still a genuine concern.
Sorry no help here.

The pills that doctors prescribe don't really work. My daughter just turned 7, and I just barely dried up, and I only nursed her for 10 months! Don't worry about it, it's fairly common, unless you are leaking alot don't worry about it too much.

Some medications can cause lactation to begin and/or continue. These include Prozac and Risperdal. If you're taking any medications at all, ask your doctor if any of the side effects include possible lactation.
