A few weeks ago my truck started having troubles, it would click when I turned the key and sometimes start, lights work and dim slightly when ignition is turned. It has gotten worse so now I don't even try. I cleaned the battery cables and still same deal. Not sure if I should be checking starter/solenoid or maybe its just a weak battery? Its a 1983 GMC pickup so the starter is hard to get at. Hoping its battery related.

It is easy to determine.
Get a set of 'good' jumper cables ( not those cheap ones from wal-mart) and try it with a good battery jumped to your GMC.
If it starts fine with the jumper cables attached, it is your battery. If not it is your solenoid or starter.
Wal-mart has good batteries and will load test your battery for free.
So drive down to the local auto parts and have them check it, or take it to Wally world (Wal-Mart) and let them check your battery.

It depends on when it isn't starting. If it doesn't want to start in the mornings, or after setting for a while, then it's probably the battery. If it does it anytime, then it is probably the starter. If it only does it after driving, but starts after setting a while, then it could be the solenoid on the starter, the timing, or the alternator. First of all, have the battery checked. Most discount parts store will do this for free. If it's fine, then take the starter off and have the same thing done. If it tests okay, then you could have a dead spot in the armature and has to hit a certain spot to not work. You can also heat up the solenoid with a hair drier of heat gun to simulate the truck running for a while to test it.

Most likely it's a bad solenoid, it's run down your battery. The solenoid is fairly cheap, it's usually connected right to your starter, and in the '70 and earlier were really easy to replace yourself.

If it is a single click and then nothing, it is your starter solenoid. If it is a series of clicks then you have a bad ground or a bad connection somewhere.

My guess is the battery. Just had the same problem with my buddy's chopper. Take the battery out and have it tested. It probably has a bad cell. The cells work like a chain, one bad link, and it sucks.
