For no conceiveable reason and with no prior attempt to contact me, my neighbors (semi-detached house) have taken it upon themselves to rip up my garden and, in the process, have destroyed items of sentimental value which cannot be replaced. The police were no help.

Freakin police. What was the purpose of their destruction? Confronting them will only make it worse. Don't worry. What comes around goes around.

File a report and and take them to court.I know there is more to this story than you are saying because if someone does that to your property it is against the law it is called destruction of private property.

get all "People's Court" on them.

And call the police again. They have the obligation to go tehre to fill a report. That is all they will do though

How were the police no help? Well you could get a dog and surveillance camera.

If you have a witness, file a lawsuit against them.
