you can't turn it off, that is why its a footprint in your life. you can see a psychologist if its something horrible, but if it was something pleasant then that is something good to carry around with you. another suggestion, find another footprint...

wow. this is something i think i've dealt with (on such a large scale) too. this is what i think: people like us, who reflect on such large losses, are rare and probably more sensitive and philosophical than others. these people who have left your life have made a footprint for a reason. perhaps you should go to therapy and try to figure out what the purpose of the relationship was---things always happen for a reason. i think it is important to remember, though, that just because you are having a hard time getting that person out of your mind, it does not mean that there is ample reason to go back. it just means there are unresolved issues that are eating at you. and you need to discover the purpose of the downfall of that relationship. remember, there are SO many people in the world---people who can fill the voids that you are feeling and people who can help you discover new parts of yourself you never knew you had. believe me, i have just gone through something like this. and i met someone who made me think so differently. our relationship was brief, but he taught me so much about moving on and about discovering yourself. sometimes you have to make things a positive and spiritual insight, even when seemingly they are not. whatever it is you do, do not dwell. be proactive in your search for meaning. and don't let anyone else give you the answers. discover them yourself. good luck on your journey.

I believe that if things between me and another person were meant to be, they WILL be eventually. On the other hand, I believe that no matter what situation I'm thrown into, I will find a way to be happy. If you have this faith in yourself, and in what will be, I think you'll be able to move on and know that whatever happens is for the best. However my friend died years ago. Of course she has left a footprint on my life, and I don't want it to go away. It is just something I have to deal with.
