While David took possession of Jerusalem in 1000 BCE, the city was already occupied and clearly had earlier roots. "At the time of the Davidic occupation, Jerusalem was already two thousand years old. Its original inhabitants were not Jews but Canaanites, Amorites, Jebusites, Hittites and other races each of whom had a culture and language as well as art, industry and agriculture." See below for the full text of the interesting article.
For reference, the books of Kings and Chronicles are very accurate historical documents.
It is interesting to know that Abraham came to the city some 1000 years before.
A good book on the subject is Jerusalem: One City, Three Faiths, (Alfred Knopf, New York, 1996) by Karen Armstrong.
Most interesting is the prophet Zechariah who talks about the end times when all peoples shall wrestle with Jerusalem. You didn't want Biblical examples, at least you know it's there.(Zech 12:3)
