The Warwick Hotel is in the heart of the Museum District and the area is much more pleasant than downtown. It's also next to the Metro rail line so you don't have to walk or take a cab downtown. If you stay in the Museum District you're also next to Herrmann Park and the Houston Zoo if you are interested in outdoor activities. I've included a link to a map of the rail line as well as schedule information if you decide to use the Metro light rail system (the bus system is terrible, I'd stay away from it). See link 1.
I've also included a link to other Museum District hotels (see link 2) The Warwick is by far set in the most pleasant area.

Minute Maid Park is 3.7 miles from the Museum of Natural Science.

I am readily aware of 3 that are within walking distance. I would suggest the Hilton that is across the street from the Toyota Center. If you'd like I'll research this and get back to you...
