No purpose, they just happen. The fetus doesn't differentiate into gender until the 9th week or so, and so the nipples that grow up until that time stay with both sexes. Under certain circumstances, male nipples can generate milk.

I don't know but they must have some purpose if the nipples are there

Men have nipples because we all begin life as females. At some point in the pregnancy, the fetus becomes male if it has the right chromosomes, I believe XY. XX begets female.
