To encourage participation and reward great answers, Yahoo! Answers has a system of points and levels. The number of points you get depends on the specific action you take. The points table below summarizes the point values for different actions. While you can't use points to buy or redeem anything, they do allow everyone to recognize how active and helpful you've been. (And they give you another excuse to brag to your friends.)

It's kind of a status thing - just to know that people like my answers (when hoping for 10 points). Personal gratification all the way.
Have a lovely rest of the evening.

I like to see if I can reach my limit for each level every day. To me it is just a personal challenge and as a side note I might just help someone along the way. That is my reward.

You're absolutely correct! There is no reason at all. When I first started doing yahoo answers I wondered the same thing.

yahoo system auto generates subliminal messages to its users as soon as they sign on, and hypnothize ppl into answering one pointless question after another... which is exactly what i am doing now...
one day Yahoo will dominate the world... and by having more points i will be its leading sheep of the pack.

You need points to ask questions, and they also limit what you can do on the site based on your point level. Click on your level under your name to see a table with all the levels and their limitations.
