Ask them. I've written UCAS references myself. However it would be considered unusual not to use the Head Teacher who would be able to cover more aspects than a specific subject teacher. Having said that some heads delegate, often to the Head of Year or a form tutor.

It's usually the head of sixth form or your form tutor who writes your reference, after getting comments from all of your subject teachers. Any good head of sixth will be going about UCAS forms from the moment you get back after the summer - if they haven't already started!
Good luck with your application, I hope you end up where you want to be.

Look at f.a.q. 28 & 29 on UCAS online 'Apply' - see below. You should also look at f.a.q. 9.
Most schools and colleges have highly organised systems for writing their references which generally include the comments from your subject teachers and tutor/year head.
Your application must be made through your school or college and cannot be submitted until the reference is completed.

There should be time before uni starts (it's after school does) to get a reference. Or put a request in writing to the head, he or she will be in and out of school throughout the holidays.

they type out their reference and u stick it on the appropriate section. I asked the head of department - he typed it out and then i glued it on. Worked a treat and was accepted by uni two years ago.

Talk to them and ask. Email them if you have to. Try a teacher that actually knew you, though, not one you had a huge class from.
