High octane gas has additives to slow down the burn, so the fuel burns more completely. You can add octane booster and get the same effect as high octane gas, but do the math first. If regular gas is $3.00 a gallon and premium is $3.30 a gallon and you get 20 gallons of gas, figure out how much each grade of gas costs. The regular would be $60.00 and the premium would be $66.00. Is the additive worth what it would cost of adding it? Remember, most bottles of octane boosters bump up the rating by 2 points, so it would take at least 3 bottles to get it from 87 octane to 92 octane. Figuring the better boosters go for between $2.49 to $8.99 a bottle, is it more cost effective to buy the octane booster, or just put premium in the tank?
The only way to really tell if a higher octane gas is better is to fill the tank with regular and drive till you get 1/4 of a tank and check the mileage. Then go fill it with a higher grade gas and drive till you get to 1/4 tank and figure the mileage again. If you get better mileage out of the higher grade gas it might make sense to use it.

Depends. If your car was designed to run on high octane gas, then yes. However, you will not see any benefit in using higer octane gas than your car manufacture's recommendation. Not to mention they cost about 10 - 20 cents more per gallon. STP treatments are meant to clean your fuel intake system. So I'm assuming that you're asking if using high octane gas leaves your fuel intake system cleaner. Then the answer is no.

No not really,,there is a myth about gas,,it seems people think the more they pay,,the better the gas is,,not true,,they did a test a while back on both regular and high test to see if it would perform better,,and the low grade did as good as the high grade,,this is because newer cars are designed to run on regular gas,,so your wasting money if you buy the high test,,true it might have more octane in it,,,,which wasn't proven either in the test they did,,,but it wont help your car any,,by using it,,but it will lighten up your wallet a little,,i hope this helps,,i own a repair shop,,and get asked this question a lot.

High octane gas is no better than regular, unless your car is a very special case.
Look in your owner's manual to find out.

octane rating are just telling you how the gas burn and how much energy is given off by the burning gas....the difference at the gas pump really makes no difference.....but racing gas is at least 104 octane--and thats when power comes up. look at aviation gas-its at 104+ octune so it burns better so there is no power loss by bad burning

Better? no. Just use the lowest octane that's at or above the mfg recomendation. Don't waste your money on treatments.

My Toyota Tundra pings slightly under hard acceleration with 87 octane. With 91, it does not.

NO...most cars manufactured run better on just the regular grade gas. I have an '06 Hyundai Sonata. The owner's manual recommends just regular and advises against using the higher grades.

You should only use high-octane gas if your engine is knocking.

It will not make your car go any faster. You only have to run it in cars that need it..like turbocharged cars and cars that have higher compression. It keeps the cars from getting spark knock.
