The past is like a magnet that tries to pull us back into it to dwell on uncomfortable situations. I think, it is less a matter of cleaning than allowing the mind to release the past. So that it is neither a ritual or a cleaning; it is a releasing a the things of the past without dwelling on the memories.

It should be a renewing ritual.
If it is a form of torture for you, you are trying to do it. The trick is to be in a place where you can do it and not to try. If a thought comes let it go just as easily as it came. Try concentrating on your breath going in and out of your nostrils.

neither a necessary evil. we all like nice clean clothes and a clean and tidy home. the home does not get tidy on it's own, someone has to do the cleaning. so stop complaining at just do your chores.
you make half the mess i guess, so make that mess less and clean it up.
because no one in there right mind enjoys cleaning it has long been used as a form of punishment in institutions like the armed forces for example.
just my opinion.

Definitely cleansing to the soul, and incredibly rewarding... when you're finished! But before that... definitely torturous! ;) I suppose it all depends on what you are cleaning, too... Vacuuming is something I love... scrubbing the toilet - not so much.
