It's not so much a question of speed, more about endurance. Good Luck.

Do cross country when school starts. You'll benefit greatly from the distance runs and improve your endurance greatly. The best thing to do to keep you motivated is to join with a friend who is at about the same athletic ability with you. Then you two can keep each other accountable. It's always easier to do something new and challenging with a friend. By the end of the season your mile time and all your other times should be a lot better. Keep running after the season and then when track starts in late winter/early spring join that. You might even think about different events: sprints, middle distance, long distance, maybe even field events like discus, long jump. Good luck and keep running...you'll go places!!

the first tip is that you are a great runner just because you want to ! I am a former state champ and trust me attitude is the first step. start with the track at your school. 4 times around is a mile. clock yourself and improve. just run one mile ,check your time jog one really slow cool down lap then run three 200's starting at 1/4 speed up to 1/2 speed and finishing off at 3/4 speed. you'll break 6 mins in around three weeks if you do this at least four times a week. stop whinning! and commit !you can do this!

When you join the cross country team, you have training for a while before you actually start competing. The coach will give you tips on how to be a better runner and you get into better shape really quick.

train. make a schedule and STICK TO IT. Run for an extra long length on one day of the week (slowly, enjoyable pace, but not like, walking or light jogging) I suggest running a few miles every day, running a few miles and then working on speed one-two days of the week, you probably should do 2-3 miles every day, and the hard workouts on wednesdays and long length workouts on saturdays/sundays. make sure you stretch and lift weights and do crunches as well. Other than that, I don't know what to tell you, I mean, I could write you up a schedule, but writing up your own is much more fun. Good luck!

Track is great for dicipline, I ran track for 8 years and loved it. You don't have to be a distance runner, but if you wanna cut down that mile time go out for Cross Country too. Both sports require alot of time but for me it was worth it, I had alot of fun and learned a lot about myself.

that sound great. Well getting better at something is practicing. everyday. Start walking everyday and then get up to running when your ready. workout a little bit and that will build up some mussel. Just take it day by day. If it doesnt work out at tryouts then you can find something else you wanna do. Just because someone says your not good enough. doesnt mean you have to give up on yourself. Just give them all you got.

You have to run everyday or every other day...each time you try to go further than you did before. It takes time and you MUST PACE yourelf. It also helps if you can get someone to run with you. It takes your mind off fatigue
