Yes, it's what we imagine that Might be there that is so frightening, but what are the odds? If there IS someting there (most unlikely), you'll want your wits about you if you need to react in an emergency. You're braver than you give yourself credit for. Be prepared and feel safe, don't let "it" win when it's not even there! I used to be so scared to go out to the barn at night to feed the horses after we'd been gone somewhere, and in all that time, nuthin' ever happened! I could've enjoyed the dark more! Ya live and ya learn...

You're not so much afraid of the dark as you are of the unknown. You're almost a teenager and have no idea where your life is heading. Whichever door you choose may be the wrong one. Trust me on this -- you are not alone. You obviously turn to your family for help when you are afraid (you ran toward them when you left your room). That's good. They'll help you through the next few years until you are able to make your own decisions with confidence. Oh you'll get angry when won't trust your judgment, but they're just trying to protect you -- not from the dark, but from life's mishaps which can hurt you.
Don't be upset because you can't handle everything by yourself yet -- the dark or school or the people you meet. Eventually you'll be able to deal with almost everything that comes your way. But even when you're in your 50's, your mother (may you be so lucky that she's still alive) will still try to tell you the best way to do things. That's what parents are for.

Yes, I'd say that's quite normal. Your mind can lead you to believe many fearful thoughts and once you get started it can just intensify until you get out of the situation. You have to find a way to reassure yourself that all is safe and normal in your house and the scary thoughts are just in your mind. Probably the best help may be a dog to sleep with you and make you feel safe. I know that feeling can overcome people alot older than 12 so don't feel that it's unusual. It's quite normal, in fact. Something that everyone goes through at times. Maybe there's a family member you feel close enough to talk about the situation and offer advice.

well, i'm no expert on what is "normal"...but i'm 18, and i still get scared of the dark. It is pretty common even among adults, and you may grow out of it as you mature. It's a reasonable psychological human reaction to be afraid of the dark because when the lights are out your surroundings become unseen and unknown. Most people are afraid of the unknown. Don't worry to much, unless it becomes an irrational phobia that inhibits your daily life.

Of course its normal sweetie. Try this- Play the Alphabet game- I used to do it with my daughter.
Pick a subject-like fruits and go through each letter and pick a fruit that begins with each letter
Like A-apple, b-banana and so forth. It will foce you to think about any other than being in your dark room and the repetitiveness of the game will soothe you.
Or listen to some beautuful music

Ask yourself what it is about the dark that frightens you and try to understand it well enough that it does not become a fear. Talking to your parents and friends about this can also help. If it gets worse maybe you and your parents can seek additional help.
