A charity might take it, however, I strongly advise you to remove or severely scratch the hard drive to render it useless. I have 3 computers (kept the old for a while) but I intend to remove and destroy the HD before I discard or give it away. Someone - with more knowledge than I - could get your sign-ins and passwords if you don't.

If you go to church, you could ask your priest/pastor/rabbi if he knows someone in need who could use it.

I'd format the harddrive before you get rid of it. I'd go on craigslist.org and list it as free, someone is bound to pick it up.

What you should probably do if you have any sensitive data on your harddrive is erase it yourself (here is a good one http://www.heidi.ie/eraser/ ). Yes, you can donate it to a charity organization.
