did you know that fish have no memory whatsoever? everything is always new to them. that is why they swim in circles. they will see a certain rock, then they will swim away, then they will go back to it and they will not remember it ever being there. i think that is wicked cool.

Did you know that you are ignorant?

Try looking up real information before opening your mouth and spewing false information.

Fish do have memories that span way beyond a few seconds. It's particularly evident especially with curious and 'intelligent' fish like many cichlids, some puffers and certain marine fish.

Territorial fish are particularly intuned and aware of their surroundings. Rearrange the tank and they're somewhat disorganized until they re-learn (and basically MEMORIZE) the new layout of the tank.

Fascinating. How in the world does someone prove this theory to be true? Who would bother to question it? There is a local pet store that has a fish who will come up to the surface of the water to be petted. You have to put your hand all the way under and he will come and cradle against your hand. They put other things in there to see if he will do it to anything, he doesn't. I just figure he recognizes the human hand and likes the feel of it. Wouldn't he have to have a memory of it though?
Great, now I'll never get to sleep tonight!

Ummm, that is completely and utterly FALSE. Why do they learn to beg every time you walk by their tank? Swimming up and down frantically to get your attention in hopes of being fed. And they sure as heck aren't facing the back of the tank...they are front and center because they KNOW where the food is going to be.
If that was true then how do you explain this: http://www.fish-school.com/index.htm
Mythbusters did a segment on this very myth and busted it!!!

How is it then that my fish know when I am going to feed them and all come to the top of the tank at the spot where I drop the food into the water?

That says memory to me...

How does a person figure out if a fish remembers something or not? I don't think you could ask them, and I don't know how you do a memory test with them, versus a rat or something. Just wondering?

i have a goldfish she/he (im not sure of its sex) is a fat a*s. its like 6'' long and like 5-6 times a day, sometimes more, it goes to the same corner up top closest to me and swims back and forth like a fish out of water until i throw some pellets in the tank! its a picky hog too, i've had it for almost 3 years and everytime i switch its food even for a day, it gets bummed and will sit around and not ''beg'' for food until i switch back to its normal food. goldy is a huge fatty
