If somehow a rural town raised enough money to support a football team, would it be allowed to start a franchise?

The NFL owners vote on what towns get a franchise. You'd have to make a remarkable sales presentation to get a franchise anywhere but a large city.

I don't know if they would allow a new team to start in a small rural town but Green Bay is the smallest town with an NFL team. It has a population of 100,000 currently...

So maybe 100,000 is an unofficial minimum. It has to do with the potential of selling tickets and making money in the area.

Cities do not determine what keeps a football team in an area, but rather, markets do. Green Bay may only have 100K people in it, but the surrounding market is 500K. Still small, but not microscopic.

But if a market can provide enough fan support and marketing despite its small size, the NFL may conisder moving there. However, don't bet on it.

The days of the large market teams heading to smaller pastures are over.

The 49er's aren't going to move to Lincon, the NFL's not going to expand into Albany and the Giants aren't going to head over to Bangor.

there is not realy a set population for recieving a nfl franchise. for example, green bay only has a population of 100,000 people. it just depends on weather the nfl comish thinks there is enough people in that markit to maintain a profitable football franchise. it all depends in the cities interest. it also depends on weather the city can pass legislation on a tax to build a big enough field

Green Bay has a population of 101,100. It is the smallest market for a team. The NFL owners vote and decide on expansion teams, as I understand it.

I'm not quite sure if there is a population requirement... but the city has to be a major metro populated area with plenty of marketable refuge and a heavy economy.

It all depends on the money. I'm sure Bill Gates could get one to play in his living room if he was willing to part with the cash.
