They have two settings to handle different sized nuts and bolts. If you look around a bit, you can find pliers without a slip joint if it really bothers you.

The small setting is for small gripping action and the large setting provides a wider grip to grip bigger things. Good Luck

Pliers have two setting for grasping smaller and larger things.
