The show was called The New People. I loved it and I was upset when it was canceled.

Are you sure about the title? There is no such program/movie listed on indb.com.

There was a reality/news program called "Real People." It was similar to shows like "That's Incredible" and "Ripley's Believe it or Not." (both of which came later) That show, I do remember.

After some research, the closest plot I can come up with would be the "Danger Island" serial shown on the "Banana Splits" show at the end of the 60s, generally rerun in the 70s. The serial starred Frank Aletter and Jan Michael Vincent.

The show I remember from the 70s called Real People was sort of like a talk show/news show that showed the freaks and geeks from around the country. They showed hog-calling contests, a guy that was a marathon runner but had artificial limbs, a guy with no arms that ate with his feet, a couple who were both transexuls, had children, but one became a male and the other became a female--people who were different in various really noticeable ways. It was a fun show. Don't remember anything about airplane crash survivors on a desert island.

'Real People' was an NBC reality series that aired from 1979 to 1984, generally on Sunday nights. The program focused on taped visits to people with unique occupations or hobbies, and occasionally brought some of them in-studio to interact with the audience.

Among the regular hosts were Sarah Purcell, Byron Allen, Skip Stephenson, Bill Rafferty and Fred Willard. The show was produced by George Schlatter, who had previously co-created Laugh-In for NBC.

I remember a show called Real People with Skip Stephenson and Sarah Parcell. Don't recall any plane crash show.

Real People was a variety show about - guess what - real people. Not sure what you are referring to, it must have had a different name though.
