sometimes they're actually more comfortable than full-butt underwear.

Sure, not all thongs are comfortable but the same can be said for full coverage underwear. In fact, sometimes it ends up in your crack, too. As long as the thong doesn't poke out the top of your pants or skirt, it is a much classier alternative to regular underwear; there will be no panty lines and really and truly, the behind just looks better in form fitting clothing when it isn't being mashed by granny panties.

Some feel comfortable and hide panty lines, but depends which ones you use. Some are made from a material that will hold in moisture and may cause infection. I don't wear them all the time. Who cares about it being floss for the butt crack, what about tighty whiteys? Don't they strangle a mans scrotum, but they still wear em.

I don't have time to dig up the links to the web sites but a fashion agency in Australia conducted a survey pertaining to the rapidly increasing popularity of g-string panties. First of all it isn't just porn stars and models that wear them but real everyday women of all ages who don't want visible panty lines to show through clothing. Also the survey found that fewer women are dressing WITHOUT panties because of g-strings. That is a good thing considering the current popularity of miniskirts.
Another web site mentions that the North Carolina supreme court ruled that thong and g-string bikini wearers were not indecent exposers. (Fly vs North Carolina)
I am a very conservative person myself and it took a long time for me to realize that there is very little that a woman absolutely must cover.
