How did the handshake become a form of a friendly greeting/ agreement?

In the acient days b4 toilet paper people used their left hand to wipe(seriously). So when a deal was made for a barter they would shake with there clean hand to show that the terms are agreed. I was watching that on the History channel

i heard the 'handshake' was originally an embrace of each other's forearms to make sure no one was concealing any weapons. like others said, it started in midieval times.

Originally one put out an empty right hand to show that he had no weapon. That became a sign of friendship.
