It is difficult to draw your sword when your sword hand is being held by the person you face. Thus the mutual gripping of the right hand became a salute of peace between two knights. It also quickly led to the use of the small dagger held in the left hand and designed to pierce the chain mail and stab into the throat just above the chest plate.

Actually the handshake can be traced to the early Persian empire and the Byzantinian empire where travelers from the east met travelers from the west to conduct bussiness, and as a part of agreement and brotherhood to the sale of items they shake their hands. Then the handshake was spread to the early Europeans and to the Eastern Empire.

The handshake began during the days of knights...when each party offered their hand as a sign they were not holding any weapons.

newpastorofgod is pulling your leg. Don't believe it. The first 3 answers are correct. It all began when one showed an empty right hand as a sign of having no weapons.

i heard the 'handshake' was originally an embrace of each other's forearms to make sure no one was concealing any weapons. like others said, it started in midieval times.

Originally one put out an empty right hand to show that he had no weapon. That became a sign of friendship.

I'm not certain but I think that it had something to do with showing the other person that you had no weapon in your hand.
