To me it does not matter. I am content with a game fairly played by venturesome players, reckoning that the knowledge gained in play is vastly more important than the change in the W/L statistic.

But I see that it matters to many players, who sometimes show or speak their distress at my breezy attitude towards play. "Why do you play if winning and losing don't matter to you?" they ask. I reply: "Games are struggles you can afford to lose." That satisfies only some of them.

If winning/losing matters to you, tell me how it matters. Since I often play with INTENSE players (especially go players), your answers will be useful to me.

To a competitive person such as myself, losing repeatedly (as I often do playing against my husband) gets to be a bit of a kick to my ego's shins! I don't get bent too often, unless he begins to gloat, then it just dredges up many bad memories.

I learned early on (thanks to my LOVELY mother) that competition IS important and that winning is EVERYTHING. When we would play cards (the only type of game she ever engaged in) you had to let her win - no matter what - or there'd be hell to pay for about oh, the REST OF YOUR LIFE! No joke.
I no longer take the time to play any sort of game with her...which is really too bad, but time has not changed her attitude one bit!

So really winning isn't the be-all-end-all of playing a game, but it IS nice to come out ahead sometimes.

it depends what kinds of games. if you're playing a sports game, then ofcourse winning matters. if you're just gonna let the other person win all the time, there really is no point in playing. but if you're playing like an rpg, ur main purpose is to kill the last boss, that's what winning is. yet after that, in most rpg's, theres still items and secrets u can unlock after defeating the last boss.

I've always been told I'm quite competitive, so I'll answer this to the best of my ability. I think that when it comes down to it, we feel that games are ways to compare ourselves to others in a fair/standard way. By winning, it makes us believe (albeit in an almost unconscious level) that we are more superior. All in all, it goes straight to wanting to be better than others.

About all winning does to you is boost your ego. Personally, if it's a really good game then I really don't mind. Crap happens. May as well spend all of it on something that doesn't really matter.
