yes! there was a guy in Zimbabwe that trained African elephants to do just that. but because of the situation there, he moved his elephants to Botswana and he's running his elephant safaries in the okavongo delta. the south Africans are riding African elephants to catch poachers.

YES.......THEM GUYS ARE CALLED "mahouts". IN OTHER WORD A ELEPHANT HANDLER - HIS BEST BUDDY.

EACH ELEPHANT HAS A DEDICATED MAHOUT OR AT THE MOST TWO HANDLERS, WHO ARE ALMOST LIKE WEDED TO THE ANIMAL & LIVE WITH IT FOR THEIR ENTIRE LIFE, SPECIALLY IN ASIA.

THEM GUYS SIT ON A ELEPHANTS HEAD TO STEER IT AROUND BY NUDGING IT BEHIND THE EARS & TALKING TO THE ANIMAL. GIVES THE MAHOUT MORE CONTROL ON THEM....................
