i am going to be a freshman when school starts in Aug. 21. I selected band as one of my classes back when i did my choice slips in january of 2006. i didnt know how was band gonna be in high school so i just chose it because i played in it in middle school. then they call me to go to practice since july 5 and i was mad because my vacations were too short and my family likes to visit relatives all acroos the country throughout the summer. so i started going to practices even though school starts until aug. 21 and they treat you like if you were in the military or bootcamp. you cannot mess up or they will punish you by running or by doind pushups or other kinds. i started missing practice since last week because i think in my mind it is my vacation and being treated like that oh no. so i decided that as soon as school starts i will change my schedule to something else because i am not going to be treated like that. what do you suggest should i change it because i think i am way behind.

I'm not going to lie. Marching Band can be tough and demanding. It is not like middle school band. I started band in 5th grade and I enjoyed it. When I got to 9th grade (freshman year), I wanted to quit band but I was not allowed. I was scared to march and the thought of giving up a month of my summer vacation for band camp, parades and band shows made me upset. But, if it hadn't been for that month of hardwork and dedication, our marching band would have never got so far and win so many awards. When it got to be football season, I was glad I stuck it out in marching band. I had a blast at the football games with my friends and traveling to away games was the best. You will be amazed at the amount of memories you make along the way. I am 22 years old now and I still have fond memories. Please try to stick it out. You will be glad you did in the end!

Good luck and have fun!

i think you should try band at least this year, besides you might like it and meet some really cool people. I almost quit band because of summer band too. Once school starts it shouldn't be too bad, the director(s) is just trying to get things done during the summer and will probably back down when school starts. i stayed in band from 5-12 grade and i'm glad i stayed with it.

Personally, i love marching band, but i know that it isn't for everyone. Only commit to it if you have the time and the desire to be in a high school marching band, not just if you want something to do.

Being in band will pretty much determine your way of life for the next four years. It's very time consuming and has it's own culture. If you really enjoy playing your instrument, stay with it, but if your heart's not in it, try something else for an elective. (Art, shop/graphic design, or chorus are my recommendations.)

Stay away from band. You never heard of a twenty year old marching band super star.
