If the heads of every country could have their perceptions altered, so that they realise how small we are in comparison to the rest of the Universe, do you think it would put an end to all wars and poverty, as humanity readjusts its perceptions of itself? We seem so big to ourselves with our skyscrapers and whatnot, but in fact we are just dust in the wind, comparatively.

ah, but the terrorists wouldn't have an excuse to do their thing if everything was just peachy.

the whole point of this question is to ask whether readjusting perceptions would make the world leaders (ok, and the terrorists) realise that Earth is small fry compared to what's really out there -- the idea is to make them realise that the problems and obstacles they instigate are stupid, and basically to scare them into sorting things out.

now that it is interesting - space being exploited by the very people that exploit their own planet.
All I'm saying, essentially, is that things should be done 'for humanity's sake', rather than for God, the devil or bob's. Humanity is what matters here and now; how can we watch our fellow human beings suffer 'cos they lost the geographic lottery, and are either exploited by some profit hungry murderer, or just abandoned?

no because the elite of the world will always find "problem" to start a war so that they can make money from the results.

You're on the right track. This is why the space program is so important, especially when several nations work as a team. Remember how the world reacted to the Apollo 13 crisis? I think most people saw the Astronauts as humans rather than Americans. It truly helps to put things in the proper perspective.
I don't think it will solve all the worlds problems or put an end to war, since religious differences will always fuel the fighting... but your notion is sound, and certainly worth the effort!

The head figures of every country will never see eye to eye. People do things for thier own profit (directly or indirectly); there's lot's of potential profit in space. The potential of profits brings war. Poverty will always exist. Every political system that has tried to solve poverty has failed. So further exploring space will not come from realizing how small we really are.
That doesn't mean I want space to be unexplored. I love to think about what is out there beyond this grain of dust called Earth. The possibilities haven't ended yet.

I think I understand how small we are in comparison with the universe and I feel probably most world leaders do too. Albeit that I am supremely insignificant on a cosmic scale I am still interested in my health and prosperity and that of my family, the community I live in and more distantly other communities. I think people act with a mixture of selfishness and altruism and perceptions of their place in the universe doesn't change that.

The relative size of us and our significance to unknowns isn't the issue. We need to decide what the Net Creativity of the human species is going to be, and how much we can sustain with the resources we now have, instead of planning to magically solve problems sometime in the future. We spend more time evaluating how many deer can be supported on our land than we do thinking about the population of people.

I wondered if something like Independence Day the movie actually happened. Perhaps some nice race of aliens could come down and scare everyone into working together and making peace, what else is going to work?

i think we have made enough a mess of the earth and the atmosphere surrounding it that we have most likely already damaged part of the universe without going further into it and destroying more. learn to look out for and care for what you have or have the use of before trading in

Even if that were to happen (which it won't), there would be plenty of rabble-rousers just waiting for the chance to overthrow their philosopher kings. It would be easy if the leaders were focused on such vagaries.
Would not matter a whit.
