Being a voracious reader and, for the past three years, a bookstore employee, I have had the opportunity to meet some great authors. Who have you met and what were they like?

My list:

Nathaniel Philbrick (lovely man, a little quiet)
Ray Bradbury (a real gentleman)
Robert Jordan (a little abrupt but I found out later he was sick at the time, so he can be excused)
David Drake (very nice)
Barry Eisler (a funny guy)
George RR Martin (looks like a garden gnomef; a sweet man)
Terry Brooks (lots of fun!)
Greg Keyes (very kind)
Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman (Hickman is a riot!)
RA Salvatore (possibly the most personable, funny author I've worked with)

Yeah, I'm in charge of the SF/Fantasy section if you didn't guess...

Hello, I work at a bookstore too!

I've also met Terry Brooks and I agree, he is so much fun and very personable. The first time I met him I had 15 of his hardcovers to sign and he patiently signed all of them! <3

Ray Bradbury was so tired when i met him and he had sun glasses on; he had just endured a flight from London and came straight to the signing.

Okay my list continues here:
Gore Vidal
Arianna Huffington
Joan Didion
Brian Jacques (another wonderful person)
Michael Crichton
Chris Mooney
Dave Barry
Ridley Pearson
Harry Turtledove
Catherine Asaro
Lee Child
Harlen Coben
Mitch Albom

If you ever happen to be in the Los Angeles Area the last week of April, we have the LA Times Festival of Books every year and it's a 2 day Festival of so many wonderful lectures, discussions, signings, and shops! It's on the UCLA campus and it's a huge deal with tickets for the lectures and readings!

Jerzy Kosinski: Met briefly at the Public Theater. Cordial and willing to converse. Committed suicide not long after.

Mark Leyner: A friend from Hoboken: Open and honest. Check out his books.

John Calder: Friendly and a gentleman. Always willing to help out. Wrote books about the opera and published William Burroughs and Samuel Beckett.

Joseph Papp: Founder of the Public Theater in NYC. Producer of Shakespeare in the Park. Wrote books about you guessed it "Shakespeare". Me and friend introduced ourselves at the Public. He was nice enough to spend five minutes with us.

I have never met any famous authors in person, but I have corresponded with a number of them. A lot of people don't realize that if you write to an author in care of their publisher, your letter will get passed on to the writer.

Two of my favorite letters (these were not form letters) came from:

1. Lee Iacocca
2. A secretary to The Prince of Wales

Rebecca Brandewyne from 1982-she was at a bookstore signing autographs. It's the only romance book I got and I have to explain it to everyone who sees it (IT'S AUTOGRAPHED THAT'S WHY I HAVE IT)
My dream list of authors to meet:
Dean Koontz, Douglas Preston/Lincoln Child, Stephen Hunter, Tim LaHaye/Jerry B. Jenkins, John Sandford, Paul Levine, James Patterson, Ridley Pearson, and Stephen King (although there was this guy who looked kind looked like him (tall sort of scary/goofy looking) at Wal-Mart and he was this lady who kind of looked like his wife Tabitha. I should of ask him if he was SK and if he was what the beep he was doing at a Wal-mart in the middle of Arkansas). But I didn't.

Did a workshop with Diana Gabaldon -- very interesting, very down to earth, and a fascinating writer!
She was one of a dozen top authors, but the one who was most generous in sharing techniques.
