Rock-a-bye, baby, is generally considered to be a lullaby, a rhythmic tune that bores a baby to sleep.

Many nursery rhymes in the west are actually morbid germanic tales that were cleaned up. Humpty Dumpty, after all, does not survive his tragic plunge from the wall - though I suppose a clockmaker would have had a better chance of putting a broken eggshell together than knights and horses.

...and speaking of which, the baby falls out of a tree in "Rock-a-Bye, Baby". See, this is why we're all needing therapy.

Thank you. Now I understand why I am so neurotic. It was the nursery rhymes.

Our personal family favorite was "Rock a bye baby" but we changed it up a bit to make it more loving .
Rock a bye baby in the tree top
When the wind blows the cradle will rock
And when the bow breaks the baby wont fall
For mommy/daddy will catch you
Cradle in all

Hush little baby...
Twinkle, twinkly, little star...
You are my sunshine...
Row, row, row your boat...
1.. 2.. buckle my shoe...
Itsy bitsy spider...

Best of all... pick your favorite song, one that you love to sing (and you think you sound pretty good doing it)... and sing this to your baby every chance you get (especially when both of you are relaxed). It helps if the song is soft. You'll be amazed at how much your baby will enjoy listening to your voice.
My song, and I highly recommend it is "Cest La Vi" by Emerson, Lake, and Palmer. My son stops dead in his tracks anytime I sing it. It's the cure for every ailment.

Did you ever see Nellie make water?
She pee pees one heck of a stream.
She can go for a mile and a quarter,
And you can't see Nellie for steam.

OR...

There once was a man from Gent
who's thing was so long that it bent,
To save him some trouble
He stuck it in double,
And instead of coming, he went!

Babies love this stuff......

I always sang the ABC song to my kids. Might as well teach them something as long as they're listening to my voice!

The other thing even my little itty bitties loved was the book "Goodnight, Moon".
