Most people who want to play ROCK music will prefer a guitar modeled after the Fender Stratocaster or the Gibson Les Paul (also known as LP).

Fender has a "budget" stratocaster line called the Squire line. A Squire (by fender) guitar should be appropriate for a beginning player, and should fill your needs for a long time.

If you're inexpierienced with guitars, start out playing with a relatively inexpensive electric guitar, maybe an Austin or a Walden. As you progress and gett a lot better at your guitar playing, buy a better model like a Fender or a Gibson.
Whatever you do, don't skimp on the amp. You amp can either make you or break you, so buy a relatively nice model, at about 15 watts.

I'd mostly agree w/ the ones who suggested the Epiphone Les Paul. There aren't many good rock amps for $100 though. For hard rock you need some built in effects like compression and reverb and that raises the price. You might want to consider an amp someone else traded in to get 1 for $100.

Buy second hand :o)

Spend some time in advance reading about brands and values of the product, then when you are ready to make your purchase you'll know exactly what you should be paying and not a penny more.

Electrics are much easier to learn on than acoustic guitars. But if you learn on an acoustic first, you can more easily play either option.

Think of your first guitar as a "starter". If you enjoy the pursuit, then you can sell it and upgrade later.

I hope you have fun!

You are on a budget so check out the Fender Squire equipment.
You can get a guitar and amp for around $350.00.
I have owned 20 or so guitars over the years and my two Squires (a Tele and a Strat) are what I use now.
