First answer - thats not really enough info.
+ everyone knows it's bad to wash a new born baby, so they don't wash them, they just wipe them off.
At least I hope you aren't right, but who knows, there are alot of stupid people in the world.

2nd answer - I think you are probably a little kid that doesn't know any better, but if you aren't, then you better do some reading.
Here is some advice, don't believe everything the preacher is telling you, read it for yourself.

The doctor only does the delivery and the placenta delivery. My nurses were there the whole time I was pushing. The doctor only came in when his head was crowned for the very last part of 2 hours. After that, my doctor left and the nurses, they wash them and they give them a hypatitis shot. I do believe they also will stick his foot and I forgot what that was for probably iron level or something like that. Then they will wrap him up and you will have him in your arms. But you will be tired, so they will take him and when you get him back they will probably have a hospital onsie on him/her and a beanie hat over it's head.
That is about all they do really. If you want they will take the baby at night so that you can be well rested when you get home and you don't have anyone else to take care of him/her. I would take advantage of it while you can, cause I remember not getting to much sleep after my son was born and brought home.
The nurses can be very demanding and want you to do things a certain way and might even handle your baby in a way you don't want them to. Tell them you don't want them to, this is your baby after all. They can't do anything you don't want them to.

IN most cases, with a healthy mom and baby, everything they need to do after the birth can be done with the baby in mom's arms.
They will suction the baby's airway. They take an APGAR score twice, I think it's at 1 min and 5 mins. They cut the cord. (ASK THEM to WAIT until the cords stops pulsating!) They will probably want to listen to baby's heart and lungs. Baby should be weighed and measured and bathed at some point. There is NO reason that the weighing and cleaning can't wait until after the first nursing. Unless there is a problem, there is NO REASON for baby to leave mom's arms for a long time. The antibiotics that they put in their eyes and the vitamin K shot can both wait as well. (IF you even intend to consent to those things! If you don't have STD's then there is really no reason for the ABX!)
DO NOT let them take blood for the PKU test until baby is at least 48 hours old. The blood won't do them any good if they take it before then. Baby needs to have been eating and processing food for a while before the blood for the PKU test can be taken. If they do the blood test before 48 hours, they will just have to do it AGAIN after 48 hours!
EDITED TO ADD:
You may also choose to delay the hepatitis shot until your child is older. Unless you think your baby will be having unprotected sex or sharing needles with his druggie friends. ;-)

I had a baby 7 months ago and I really didn't see anything being done with her that was unnecessary. There are a variety of quick 'tests' that are done at birth (APGAR sclae) to assess how well the infant is adjusting to the environment. This is very necessary to ensure that babies not thriving get the extra oxygen or support that they need. After those initial few hours, blood work is done to rule out a variety of blood and genetic defects. These are vital, because, although most babies have nothing, the few that they now catch with these newborn screenings saves lives. They also do a hearing test which is key to identifying hearing loss early enough that even profoundly hearing impaired children are getting the early intervention they need and are speaking and learning on time with their peers.

Some thigns that people consider not necessary are putting ointment in the babies eyes right after birth. Dr's do this to prevent eye infections, but if mother is healthy it isn't necessary. Another thing would be taking the baby to the nursery to the warmer. If the mother lies with the baby skin to skin her body heat should be enough to warm the baby. In this day and age so many people are about doing what the Dr. says because they think the Dr. knows best. I don't believe that's true. You should go with you instincts on what you want done with your baby. Remember this is YOUR child.

When my sons were born, they cut the umbilical cord and suctioned the excess amniotic fluid from their nose and throats. They wiped them off with a towel, weighed them, took their APGAR scores, weighed and measured them, put some antibiotic drops in their eyes, and gave them to me. After I was in recover/our permanent room, they did bathe them, but it was only a sponge bath...they didn't actually submerge them in water because that would have gotten the umbilical cord stump wet and not allowed it to dry and fall off naturally. They also did some bloodwork, gave them a Hepatitis B vaccination and circumcised them, but that wasn't until they were between 12 - 24 hours old.
