I am pretty good at roller blading but I hear they are not the same

Ice skating is very different from inline skating. Ice skating is much more difficult! I enjoy it a lot more, though. Be sure to bend your knees and don't move your head around a lot - keep it centered over your body. Every time you look down at your feet your head moves forward, throwing your center of balance off. This is not a problem for everyone, but it sure was for my stepson. Every time he did it he would get off balance and end up catching his toe pick on the ice. Splat. Since you rollerblade, you will probably not have the tendency to "walk" in the skates like most beginners do. This makes it very difficult to skate. If you try it and like it, I strongly recommend that you get you own pair of skates. As other people have stated, rentals are poor quality. They provide little to no ankle support and aren't sharpened nearly as often as they should be. A good pair of boots will make a world of difference in your experience of skating.

If you have never skated before, do not expect to be able to zoom around the ice right away, even if you are good at roller blading. They are not at all the same. First of all, try to get your own pair of skates, even if they are cheap. At most rinks the rental skates have hardly any support and they are never ever sharpened. If you skate on a pair of dull skates you will just slide around and have no control. One thing I can say is make sure you stand up straight and bend your knees when you skate.

I have been ice skating for seven years and I suck at rollar blading because for one thing, ice skates have blades and rollar blades have wheels, so just getting used to that is hard, and also the fact that ice skates have different edges and they have a toe pick and my rollar blades have the stop in the back so thats hard to get used to, but I bet if you practiced you would be able to stay up longer and get up faster then a lot of other people because you do rollar blade.

There is no real advice except go do it. I agree with the rental skate advice. Buy your own skates. You can take them back if you try it once and don't like it.

Lace them tight...tighter than you do with your rollerblades. Your feet should hurt a little (not too much though).

Stay near the wall until you learn to stand up on them. Propulsion is the same as with rollerblades. Just watch others that are better to help see what they do for starting, turning, and stopping.

Smile, and have fun!

i got some books at the bookstore on skating and they have helped with the basics and taught me a lot about it. i recommend the complete book of figure skating by carole shulman because it covers a lot about the sport, care of boots, nutrition and other very important factors. another good book is figure skating for dummies by kristie yamagucci.

good luck skating and have fun!

the main serious element is to objective & loosen up. It takes a protracted time & distinctive prepare to benefit to skate gracefully -- longer in case you're stressful! once you arrive on the rink take a glance around at human beings. If there are various novices, maximum of them is in simple terms no longer very modern however the only ones that look stupid are those taking themselves too heavily. (additionally, in case you're stressful it hurts extra once you fall.) shop your chin up (actually!) and snigger & have some exciting!
