When talking about dvd burners what does the "RAM" mean in DVD-RAM?

DVD-RAM mentions the discs are Digital Versatile Discs, Random Access Memory. these can not only be read but written to and rewritten by some means. They are not entirely the same as typical Random Access memory as they can only be written a certain amount of times and in certain ways depending on the disc.
