Even if it means the families are going to go all out w/ a war, then what does that have to do w/ mattresses?

It means he's going all out. He's going to war. He's going to give it everything he's got. No holds barred. Damn the torpedos, full speed ahead. Lead, follow or get out of the way!

Going to the mattresses means that the different mafia families would be going to all out war with each other. Awesome flick, isn't it? The book is good, too.

You should check out the movie "You've got Mail" with Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks. They have a huge discussion about this reference "going to the mattresses"

Take ing someone to the mattresses is slang for giving them a dirt nap, killing them, laying them to rest. It's just another metaphor.

It's an old expression. when they go to war they rent apartments secretly and get a lot of mattresses to sleep on. They stay together in these "hideouts"
