I want to at least wire a few rooms in my house to my basement with cat 6 network cable. I see as the best way is to get a new face plate for my cable connection plate and pull down through its hole along with the tv cable at least in one room that has had. one of my rooms lousy cable running to its slot since install and seems a good idea for at least directing new cable in. if the cable wires were installed better then the cable service to the bad room how much iritation would this cause me to do this in the other rooms i have cable to??? also if this is probably one of those good installed wire and it require opening walls or an electricion how much would getting somone to thread the wire if need be.

you should look into network cable drops (the little sqaure things that creep around walls, and end at a box of some sort)

why are you going for cat6? you realize that, unless you are going to spend $3,000 and up, you cannot utilize cat6's full potential, and that it is cheaper to go with cat5/e, i hope.

just look out for electrical interference from power sources, and your cable line, and whatever else. it might not hurt to shield the cables in that chinese finger trap material, as an eletrical field, and a field to keep mice and the like away if you run through the attic.

I don't know about the other answer but when I hard wired some of the rooms in my house my router was located on the second floor. So I was able to run the cables up and into the attic to reach the other rooms. When dropping back down into the other rooms it is best to attempt to come down through an interior wall so you don't have to deal with the insulation in exterior walls. If the wall you hope to place your computer is an exterior wall I would still come down through an interior wall and run the ethernet wire along the baseboard or under the carpet to the computer.

I had a room on the first floor that I wanted to network also but going from the second floor to the first was beyond my abilities so I used a installed a wireless adapter (my router is a wireless 5 port router) down there.

Currently I have three computers hard wired and two on wireless connections (1 a laptop) The wireless connections are encrypted using the routers security features so I don't have to worry too much about the occasional driveby snooper.

Your concern is interior the 1st sentence: "hooked right into a Linksys 5 port networking hub" you could no longer use a hub in this ecosystem. you go with a router. A hub isn't something greater desirable than a repeater, and does not be able of performing as a change, it incredibly is what's used on maximum living house routers. right this is the way it relatively works: once you connect the ISP's modem to the community, you're assigned a single public IP address. in case you connect a working laptop or pc directly to the modem's Ethernet port, then that IP address is assigned to the pc, by way of fact it incredibly is the only TCP/IP able gadget interior the relationship. Now, to apply greater desirable than one pc, you go with a router. The router plugs into the modem Ethernet port (the router has a WAN port enormously for this). The WAN facet of the router than takes that public IP address. then you definately plug up as much as 4 instruments into the LAN ports on the router (those are relatively change ports). The router then assignes a private IP address to each and each gadget to perceive it on your interior community. by way of fact the site visitors is going out and in of the router, it determines which gadget is sending and receiving and *routes* it to the superb gadget. the exterior international not at all sees the IP address the router assigns to each and each field. the only "seen" IP is the favourite public one is the single assigned via the ISP, and the router WAN facet controls that. it incredibly is termed "community address translation" or NAT. A hub is only a gadget that repeats an incoming sign and sends it to each port on the hub until eventually the superb one grabs it. you need to use the hub with only distinctive desktops, and assign an IP to each and each pc manually, and it will artwork. yet one you plug into an exterior community, you go with a fashion of routing the site visitors and offering suited IP addresses and protection. that's why you go with a router and why a hub won't artwork.
