Yes, it's very simple.
Once you have the modem out of the box, plug in the AC adaptor. Find the Ethernet cable (looks like a big phone line cable) and plug it into the modem and the back of your pc. Don't forget to also install the coaxial cable into the back of the modem.

Make sure before you install the new modem to call your provider customer service and let them know the Serial Number and the MAC address (This information is available on the back of the modem in a sticker), otherwise your modem will not work...

Probably, but why would you want to? Most companies include a modem and installation when you sign up for their service. And they guarantee the work and equipment if something goes wrong. Let someone else sweat it out if you're the one paying them.

Yes, you can buy a cable modem and install it yourself. Check with with your internet provider to see which one they prefer. You can buy them at BestBuy,CircuitCity any store like that.
