I want one diamond forever. I have other fingers for more diamonds if that is what he wants to give me. But the main one will not be changed. That is my story and I am sticking to it.
Trading in/up looks like money hungry

Google DE BEERS. When all the diamonds were discovered in Africa he got worried about the value of the diamond dropping. It is really not a very rare stone. So he made the "Diamond is Forever" slogan, and even set the standard for what percentage of o grooms income should be spent on the ring. Before that the ring could be anything you wanted. They actually control the amount of diamonds allowed onto the market to keep the prices high. Put whatever you want on your finger. Call it an engagement ring or an anniversary ring or whatever makes you happy.

Yes! I have had mine updated 3 times now. We always use the original diamond from my very first engagement ring. We go to someone that specially creates a one of a kind ring. So thru the years, my ring has tripled in value. To me, this means our marriage is still growing, and along with it, my husband values our relationship a little more each time he does this. The fact that he wants me to have something a little better than what he could actually afford in the beginning is a wonderful feeling. As long as I keep seeing the original diamond on my left hand, I feel very honored that he thinks this way, and the sanction of marriage is still prioritized to him.

I'd be a little attached to the first ring and want to keep it, but getting a new one is totally normal. My mom got a new one after 25 years. Her original wedding ring was soooo tiny! They were glad to be celebrating 25 years and being able to buy an upgraded ring after such a successful life together.

I don't think you need to wait 25 yrs though.

Stay attached to the wedding band, not the diamond.

People's income and lifestyles change as they get older. If you can afford a larger diamond, go for it.

I started out with a 1/3 carat and every year my husband would upgrade my diamond on HIS birthday so I would have a present to open as well. By the time we'd been married 10 years I had a, ummm, rather large stone.

Hey! His birthday was yesterday -- where's my diamond? :)

I think its a bit crass..
best solution is to keep the ring you have, wear it and just buy a different ring for another finger..
the best of both worlds....

A ring is a THING.

Who cares unless you do? If you do, and it would make you happy to get a bigger one later, get it. It's just a thing.

Jewelry is just another piece of fashion. It costs a little more, sometimes. I have outfits that cost more than some of my rings.

It's just a thing.

Now, trading the hubby is another matter...LOL

after a few years, you should be getting a marriage ring, not an engagement upgrade.

Not at all. You start with what you can afford, and then as your love/budget grows so should your rocks. Providing that your spouse is in agreement. Just save the first and wear it or give it to a daughter. (not to son, cuz if his marriage does not work you may not get it back)
