According to The Running Press Cyclopedia of Dreams:
"Dying in a dream is not too unusual,though if it happened with regularity our waking lives would probably begin to feel a little unstable.Often,derealization accompanies death so your dream can continue your observation.Otherwise,death is the wake up point....To die yourself is troubling.Most people have not invested much emotional energy in preparation for death and feel that death is a strong enemy to be avoided.Being confronted with death is a place that is uncomfortable.By the way,how did you die in your dream and do you assign responsibility to anyone for your death?These are important questions."
Another point of consideration is what you have been watching;the news and newspapers,even movies and television programs are often filled with such stories.It could have been a thought held in the back of your mind and your subconscious could have just brought it up

Well, because we are all individuals, no one can really tell you what that means for YOU. You need to examine your own life and see if that seems to connect to something you've experienced, a fear, etc. That said, there are some occurences in dreams which are generally understood to be archetypal, representing a general hope, desire, etc. In general, I believe that death actually symbolizes a big change. So, this might indicate that you are going through or anticipating undergoing a big change.

According to my little book on dream interpretation, dying in your dream is a symbol for letting go of some internal part of you, like some habit, or attitude or part of your personality. Letting go of this part of yourself seems as frightening as physically dying because you feel that this part of yourself is indispensable to life.
But we need to let go of old things for new things to develop in our lives. And so a dream in which you die tells you to change something in your life. Usually it tells you to give up a false image you have of yourself.
In your dream you didn't die of a natural death, so that points towards resistance against change. Being about murder, your dream could be telling you to radically free yourself of an old part of yourself.
However, my booklet goes on to saying that being murdered in your dream can also have the opposite meaning: It can be a warning against self-destructiveness, especially accumulated aggression inside of you, which wants to do away with important parts of yourself.

being shot = lost confidence
death = give up
It could mean that you give up certain things and yet you have no confidence in reality. Projected your own death could mean you don't want to face the consequence. That is from your subconscious mind of course

So you died in your dream? And you're still alive now? Guess the old wives tale is wrong. As for the meaning, probably just one of your fears manifesting itself in your subconscious. I mean, who isn't afraid of dying?
