Your right, it annoys the hell out of me too.

Typical conversation at work:-

Boss: "Can you do me a favour and put that report onto my memory stick to take home"

Me: "Sorry boss, i dont have the card reader for Sony MS"

Boss: "Its not Sony anything, and it plugs right into the front of the computer there, into that slot thing on the front"

Me: "Arrrhhh, then its not a memory stick its a USB Flash drive"

Boss: "Same thing, memory stick and Flash thingy"

Me: "Well no, not at all, memory stick is a trademark of Sony and flat memory device that slots into Sony devices like cameras and phones and directly into Sony Viao lap tops, Flash Drive is a small solid state memory device that can be slotted into your USB port and read like a hard drive."

Boss: "Stop being pedentic, your such a geek, you know what i meant, just copy it to this MS and get back to work"

Me (whispering) : "hehe, ok you ignorant old bastard, and i'll copy this autoexecuting key logger ive been working on to your FLASH DRIVE as well"

The end.

Memory Stick is a Sony trademark, so some people just call all flash memory cards Memory Sticks. Just like people call cotton swabs Q-Tips and facial tissue Kleenex.

By The Way: Everyone to answer this question before me is completely wrong. Sorry, I only speak the truth.

You have to admit that a USB flash drive Is a "stick" that contains "memory", therefore making it a "memory stick". But since there is a distinct object already called a "memory stick" I agree it's silly to call a USB drive the same thing.
"USB Flash Drive" is a little long and complicated to say so I just call them USB keys.

Because hey realize that USB flash drives contain memory which is arranged on a "Stick" once you open the case. Also there is a battery which is also on the "Stick" or green board which keeps it live.

Memory stick or flash drive it does not matter to me. I do not care if it is USB or not they both hold my information in memory for transporting. I call and will always call my flash drive a memory stick.

ahem.. Themselves*

And really, they aren't that much different in function. They both act to store data, so don't get your panties in a knot if something prefers to call it by something else. Memory stick sounds a lot more appropriate then USB Flash memory drive, and alot eaiser to say.

If you want to get into it more I hear memory sticks more commonly called memory chips. Strange eh?

To drive other silly people nuts. Unless you work for the Intellectual Property department at Sony, you are awfully passionate about this topic.

Yes, okay buddy and Kleenex is not tissue, a Xerox is not a copy and "Googling" is not researching information on the Internet. (by the way, I call them flash drives and I'm teaching my students the same if its any consolation)

As long as the device does what people want it to I think the name is pretty irrelevant (a rose by any other name.....) I think there are probably more pressing issues that you could spend your time getting worked up about.

They're two totally DIFFERENT things, with two totally DIFFERENT functions and two totally DIFFERENT physical features.

Flash drives are in a stick-shape
Memory sticks are in a wafer-like shape, if you will

Flash drives hold info for COMPUTERS
Memory sticks hold info for PSPs, Cameras, etc, etc.

Get it?
