Great policy, we should bring a similar, or even tougher one, in for our immigrant population in the UK.

Not quite. Many Asian countries have/had the same law. there are more females born than males to fight batles and work the land. Also to many people in to small a space to feed. So Female children were drowned or other wise killed. to make room for more useful males.
Now they face a shortage of females to give birth to more children. They made a choich to let the females live but the number of children allowed after marraige is One to keep the population stable without overcrowding more than it is. the only quick leagel way to have another is if the first child dies and the parents ask for permission from the goverment.

I had two chinese delegates over at my workplace this year - when I showed them a scan of my baby they were amazed! They're not allowed to find out the gender in China incase they abort if it's a girl as they're only allowed one child.
I think it's really bad to control people that way.. but that communism for ya!
On the other hand though - they were telling me that most of the country is in rural poverty and kids do starve...

Forced abortion?! Could you please check your facts before posting this rubbish please. China had a one child policy and taxes would increase and financial benefit for both children would dis-continue as the result of a second child. That policy is no longer in use.

I think you'll find China now have a problem. There are more boys than girls. Whenever man messes with nature, nature pays him back, the price isn't worth it.

China can not feed its people now-what will they do with more.
The earth is not crowded, only the large cities are full. The country side is empty.

I think that the Chinese government does this because they have a billion people and they are running out of room for their people and want to decrease their population.
