It would have changed the whole dynamic of the story. True, Miss Kitty was by implication a prostitute, though this was never mentioned openly. She was a kind of prostitute of good character; she wouldn't steal from a drunk or do anything else dishonest. The adults watching the show knew enough history to understand this. I'd guess that not every man would want to marry a former prostitute, even if she is honest and there is a shortage of women. She is a bit too experienced.

Kermit knows his TV history, showing love scenes or story lines involving love, sex and marriage was almost taboo in the 60's when Gunsmoke was popular. Sharon Tate, the actress murdered by the Manson family, also lamented this fact in an interview about two weeks before she was murdered. She couldn't understand why the natural act of making love couldn't be shown in movies or on TV but showing murder and other violence was acceptable. If you watch TV shows from the 60's, there was no kissing, very little touching between characters even if they were married in the show. I remember in the late 60's on the soap opera Days of Our Lives when an actress and actor kissed each other on the lips. It was just a quick peck but did the tongues ever wag for days. People were horrified that kissing was shown on daytime TV. A good example of this mentality is "The Hustler", a fine movie made about 1960 or 1961 starring Paul Newman, Jackie Gleason and Piper Laurie. There is clearly a sexual relationship between Paul Newman's character and Piper Laurie's character but it is never blatantly shown and very subtly hinted at.

Because our puritanical nation couldn't deal with that. Shooting someone...yes...loving someone...no that's too extreme...
