Bedding is way too expensive and I have to buy a pack per change. Do you think it's possible to use newspaper instead? Will there be any harm to my rabbit?

Yes you can use news papers. Shred them first, Rabbits like to dig, and it will cover up, not intentionally, The pee and poop. They burrow and move the bedding around all the time. This will keep you from having to change it every day. If not shredded, the poop will stay on top, and eventually be all over your bunny, or it will make its mind up to poop in the feed bin instead. The do not like to be dirty.

I don't know if your rabbit is an inside rabbit but I have kept one in the house. If its outside using nothing but newspaper is completely fine. Shredded newspaper is excellent for them. The problem is if its an inside pet it will smell really quick. What I did was mix the two. It helps control the odor, still gives the rabbit wood pieces to chew on, and is alot cheaper. Wood chips are expensive but the smell is horendous lol. So I mixed and it still saves alot!! It don't take much of the wood chips to help control odor. I'd say maybe 1/3 wood chips and 2/3 newspaper. If your rabbit is an inside pet I would also just like to tell u in case u don't know that u can house train a rabbit just like a cat. They will use litter boxes(with wood chips or newspaper instead of litter). I hope this was helpful and good luck!!

If you use newspaper, I recommend shredded up newspapers.

I would also like to recommend something totally different.

If your rabbit doesn't get over 10-11 pounds as an adult. I would recommend getting a cage with a wire bottom floor and tray that slides underneath the cage. It is a lot easier to keep the rabbit clean and a lot easier to clean out. If your rabbit gets over 10-11 pounds as an adult, then it should be kept on a solid bottom floor to prevent the rabbit from getting sores on its feet.

Below I'll list some websites for wire cages. The kind I refered to may be listed under stacking cages.

I have a rabbit and put newspaper down in the cage. I don't shred it because I also have a little litter box in the cage with litter that is safe for rabbits. I put the litter box in the corner she mostly pees in. The litter has to be safe for rabbits because they sometimes eat it and regular cat litter can cause problems for a rabbit. My bunny trained in the box really easily. It's not foolproof- she sometimes misses or throws her litter around when playing, but it keeps the mess and the smell down overall. Her cage is fairly easy to clean too. I don't shred the paper because she then thinks that is the place to use the bathroom. It keeps a clearer boundary between litter box and cage.

I keep my rabbits cage filled with clumping cat litter. It gets rid of any smell, is easy to clean and very cost effective. He tends to dig through it a bit but he does not manage to send it flying out of the cage. He tasted it the first night I put it in but hasn't bothered with it since. Another option is to go to a farm feed/supply and buy a bale of shavings. They are nine cubic feet of compressed shavings and cost about a quarter what a pet store sells them for (just make sure they aren't cedar).

You can do newspaper however it won't do anything for the smell. I suggest that you fill his/her litter box with wood stove pellets. They are like $5 for 50lbs. http://www.rabbit.org
