Death Be Not Proud - John Gunther (Boy with brain tumor learns to cope with death)
Lucky - Alice Sebold (Girl in college gets raped and learns to deal with the after effects)
Night - Eli Wiesel (Real life experience in Nazi camps...very very sad and emotionally difficult to read BUT, I had to read it high school so I know you could make it through as well!)
The Outsiders - S.E. Hinton (Poor kids vs. Rich kids in 1950's)
Things Fall Apart - Chinua Achebe
Beloved - Toni Morrisson (Ghost story revolving around slavery-very beautiful and very sad)
Actually, ANYTHING by Toni Morrisson is highly recommended. You will love all of her books. I promise.
Good luck and by the way, all of the books I've listed should be read-either for honors or just because....

Does the book have to be of any certain length or number of pages? Well, two books that were required reading for me in my 9th grade honors program in high school were To Kill A Mockingbird and Huckleberry Fin. However, any of these are great choices as well: Roots, Catcher in the Rye, Atlas Shrugged (over 1000 pages long), The Virtue of Selfishness, Treasure Island, War and Peace, The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.

1. Harry Potter series (read in order to understand there are 6)
2. Stephen King books
I really recomend Harry Potter because they have tons of information and then in the middle of the series at like book 4 they start to get thicker and the plot gets more exciting and all that.

I highly recommend Slaughterhouse Five by Kurt Vonnegut. I read it in high school for a project because I thought it would be quick and easy, but it turned out to be the best book I have ever read...and I read a lot! The first time I read it, I thought it was three different stories in one until I got to the last page. Different people enjoy this book for different reasons, but I love how the nonsense sentence on the last page of the book was like a bolt of lightning for me that made the whole thing dawn on me. Fantastic story; my all time favorite!

Try reading a book by H.G. Wells or Jules Verne like War of the Worlds, or Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea.

I would read " To Kill a Mocking Bird". It is a really interesting book and it is a good reading level for 9th grade. It is about a lawyer in the South that defends a black man for rape and also follows the story of his two young kids. "Fahrenheit 451" is also a good book to read because you will probably have to read it during the year anyways and it will give you a head start. It is about a society who believes reading is bad and burns every book they can find.

Read books that will help you in the future if you decide to stay in Honors Classes. Tess of the d'Urbervilles is a good but sad book. Or try Pride and Prejudice. The book is far more interesting than the movies. These books are good if you are in to romantic novels.

Read Tears of a Tiger or any other Sharon Draper book. You'll identify with the themes.
