you know the rumor to be true, but you'd rather not let the information out just yet. your fearful that it could hurt departmental morale and lead to premature resignations. What do you say to your employee?

I guess HR is your Human Resources department.

You tell her that everything can happen in business, but if the HR dept. is working well, it should not be outsourced.

So if all the team works together to make the HR more productive, chances are better that the management will notice and leave things as they are now, or more : give more resources to the HR.

Pre-mature resignation would hurt them in the long run. Unemployment compensation, etc. But, won't you feel like a bum if you don't try to prepare the people that worked so hard for you to not say anything at all? I would. They deserve something more. I would at least say " I can neither confirm nor deny that rumor".
