Notches placed in the feathers means a variety of coups were taken by the warrior. A single clipped feather indicates the wearer had cut a foe's throat and took his scalp. A feather being split almost to the quill indicates the wearer was wounded many times. A feather having its sides partially removed indicates the wearer counted coup five times. A wearer's first coup is shown by an upright feather with a horsehair tuft at its top.

There are many more, but all cannot be provided here.

A red spot on a feather indicates the warrior had killed a foe. Two or more red spots number the foe killed.

The warbonnet is significant to the Plains Indian, but vary in design, such as a single trail or double trail. Some bonnets, such as what the Blackfeet wore, had the feathers standing straight up. The Crow were among the Plains Indians having the most ornate and double-tail appendages.

I hope this helps.

I have never heard of the name Cree, but I have known several Dakota's and both boys and girls. And none have Native American, that I know of. But, you cannot always tell by their appearance.
