just wondering...somebody asked, "why are there gay people?". then this question came across my mind, who is the first gay in the world recognized as so by many people anyway?

First well-known gay man: I'm going to go with Plato.

First well-known lesbian: Sapphos (Poet from the island of Lesbos, where we get the word "lesbian", today.)

I think you're going to need a time-line to see which order all of these suggestions go in. :)

There are a lot of famous gay people from hundreds of years ago. I just read that Marie Antoinette, Queen Anne, Queen Christina of Englan all had female lovers. Eleanor Roosevelt also. Oh, I'm going ack to my reading -- this IS interesting.

Alexander the Great was a bisexual and Queen Christina of Sweden was a lesbian. And there are others though out history but these two came to mind first.

I second the Sappho comment. She helped coin the phrase "lesbian"

As for the first gay man, my dad is a United Methodist pastor, & he thinks that Paul (I think) was gay because of the "thorn in his side"

Rock Hudson I think. He was one of the first people that was famous to die of AIDS . And also to be known as gay also.
