you're going to want to try what will cost the least first...
unfortunately it sounds like a soundcard issue.
so... try to go online and re-download the drivers for your soundcard... install them... and that may take care of things.
if that doesn't work...
get a q-tip and put some rubbing alcohol on it and try to clean the connectors... it may just be a loose connection.
if that doesn't work...
you may need to look at getting a new soundcard.
let's hope that this isn't the case!

Usually the plug for the speakers is a light green color, or it may be black. Look for a connection that has a pair of headphones by it, or a circle with an arrow pointing out of it.
Make sure the system volume is turned up, when you double click the speaker next to the clock, make sure the master and wave volumes are turned up.
Look in the device manager (Control Panel->System->Hardware Tab->Device Manger Button on Windows XP, Device Manager Tab in System on Windows 98) and see if any devices have a yellow question mark or a red x. If so, install drivers or enable the device.

You need to make sure that the speakers are plugged into the right place in your computer. Should be 'audio out' if I am not mistaken. See if you have a on/off switch on your speakers which controls the volume on your computer.
Heck, maybe its time to get new speakers. I had an extra pair here from work, but I dont need them.

Compaq's usually need powered speakers. When you plug them in id there a light that shows up. If that was not the problem follow these steps exactly.
1. Right click on my computer
2. Go to manage
3. On the left hand side under system tools go to device manager
4. In the mane box scroll down till you see Sound, Video and game controllers
5. Click on that and make sure there is a device that has a name with audio in it. If not you may have to reinstall your sound card. or call the manufacture.

Try right clicking on the speaker icon on the bottom right, select adjust audio properties. On the bottom of this box that it opens will read speaker settings. Click the advance button and make sure the correct speaker is highlighted. I think it should be Desktop.
