Spyware is a separate threat.
Use the Internet Options to delete all offline files.
Get and update several Anti-spyware solutions. I use AD-AWARE and SpyBot Search & Destroy. I use the free versions from http://www.download.com Update and run these regularly. Especially IMMEDIATELY after an unexpected pop-up.
Use MSCONFIG to disable any unneeded startup programs.
You might consider more RAM for your system. Windows XP will run better with 512 MB or more. Visit http://www.coastmemory.com to look up what your system can use.
Take these steps to keep your computer ALIVE.

Hi, perhaps there are some new virus in your computer that the antivirus didn't find. you can try Norton or Mcafee to remove the virus, but you should pay for the software.
i also recommand you to use firefox with Google toolbar, which can disable the virus, becasue the virus can only run on IE.
firefox can block any any poppus and disable any virus and spywareware on webpage, so, firefox is much safer than IE. as you know, most of the virus is spread throught internet and webpage.
firefox is much smaller than IE, so i run faster than IE.
download firefox for free:

Your anti virus software is what is slowing your computer down.
Anti virus software runs in the background checking files on your hard drive and in the memory all the time.
The best thing to do is uninstall it and install a firewall program and watch what you download.
I've been running Windows 2000 for 6 years now and I haven't got a virus yet.. All I have is sygate personal firewall installed.

Get a anti-spyware loaded on your PC it is better than AV as a rootkit could be killing your process.
You can also try this product (still in beta stage) HELIOS - Advanced Malware System.
The product can detect even FUTO rootkit (considered as the most difficult ones to deal with)
The software can be downloaded from http://helios.miel-labs.com/
P.S. Defragmenting your hard disk (ideally once every month) is a good measure too.

there might be more things running on your computer that shouldn't be when you start up and also try going through pictures, games, and ect. so you don't have alot going on. I also suggest using the "desktop wizard" if you have it on your computer to get more space on the main page of your computer.
