The service Engine Soon light is the computer's only way to tell you that it has identified a problem with the engine management. If the car is newer than 1996, then if it is only "ON' then get to a repair facility soon. If it is FLASHING--this is an indication that there is an engine malfunction serious enough to cause damage to the Catalytic converter. DO NOT DRIVE ANY MORE THAN NECESSARY if this is the case. If the car is 1995 or older, revert to just get it in as soon as reasonable.

NOTE---> Do not depend on the vehicle until repairs are performed. Whatever caused the light to come on COULD get worse, Not to scare you, just a word of caution.

Could mean its time for an oil change, could be your engine coolant is low, could be many things. You would have to get the codes, or take it to a shop. Best thing to check first is the oil, and engine coolant. Normally you can drive it a day or two before it really reachs havoc on ya.

Generally the light comes on after a period of time since it was reset. Usually the dealer or oil change place will reset it after an oil change. The senser monitors mileage, driving conditions, etc. and will usually come on around 3000 miles after being reset.

Just go to nearest auto parts store and get a Haynes and/or Chiltons book on your car and a plug in tester and you can fine just about anything thats wrong with your engine, EGR, Sensors, ect.

from my experience check your oil,anti-freeze or thermostate it's located on your intake.stop driving and check it out we don't know how serious it is.sometime if you have an older vehicle or a vehicle that has a lot of miles that light stays on and you won't have any trouble at all.
