...If you've been there or live there... For a soon-to-be-first-time-visitor like myself, what are the "must see/do" over there?

It's a wonderful city, and welcomes visitors. There are tons of things to see and do, depending on your tastes. Last night was the last of the International Fireworks Competitions, this afternoon there was a Gay Pride parade and fair in the West End, the Cirque de Soleil has just ended a month-long performance, the Bard on the Beach (Shakespeare in tent, with the open backdrop showing in the mountains of the North Shore) will be on till the end of September, there are operas and concerts all over the place, plus live theatre. Granvillel Island offers all sorts of funky shopping, but there are serious stores for serious shopping as well.
There are sporting events, you can rent a kayak or canoe and paddle in False Creek or English Bay, the Lynn Canyon swinging bridge and tree-top walkway is spectacular, you can ride the gondola to the top of Grouse Mountain for a fabulous view, then hike down or ride a mountain bike down, etc.etc.etc.
There is a web site with some information at HelloBC.com and it will give you suggestions for areas close to Vancouver as well.
Bring good walking shoes, because there's lots of space to walk, and lots of things to see and do while you're out.
Welcome to Vancouver, and enjoy your visit.

Well, I live not to far from there, and I was just there today. Places I recommend going to are, Grandville Market, Gas Town, The Vancouver Aquarium, Stanly Park, China Town and the beach area. Vancouver is a very nice city. It is somewhat peaceful, and a little messy, but it has a lot to offer.
In Gas Town, Grandville Island Market, and China Town there is lots of shopping and it is also very cool.
In the middle of Grandville Island market(in front of the french bakery) is a stage(sort of) where all sorts of acts(comedians, magic, etc) go and preform for free.

So all in all I recommend Grandville Island.

Have a fun time ^_^

I'll be honest, Vancouver, and the whole lower mainland of BC
disgust me. It's all one big sprawling city.
If you want to actually SEE something, go to
Vancouver Island to Claquot Sound,
or go up north on the mainland of BC... that's where the
nature and the beauty is.
Good Luck!
